Oil and gas production, tourism, and federal government spending are important drivers of New Mexico’s economy. State government has an elaborate system of tax credits and technical assistance to promote job growth and business investment, especially in new technologies.
Many of the federal jobs relate to the military, as the state is home to three air force bases, a testing range and an army proving ground and maneuver range. It is estimated that over eleven percent of the state's total employment arises directly or indirectly from military spending. Other federal installations include the technology labs of Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories. Los Alamos is home to one of the highest percentages of PhD’s in the country, and is ranked fourth in terms of median household income.
The value of the oil and gas industry in New Mexico is roughly ten percent of the states Gross Domestic Product. This makes New Mexico a leading crude oil and natural gas producer in the United States. The Permian Basin and The San Juan Basin lie partly in the state, and New Mexico accounts for approximately four percent of the crude oil, eight and one half percent of the dry natural gas, and over ten percent of the natural gas liquids produced in the United States.
New Mexico provides a number of economic incentives to businesses operating in the state, including various types of tax credits and tax exemptions. Most of the incentives are based on job creation. The state law allows governments to provide land, buildings, and infrastructure to businesses to promote job creation. The state also provides financial incentives for film production, drawing almost one hundred productions and accounting for well over one billion dollars in revenue to the state economy.
